About The Love We Leave Behind

The Love We Leave Behind is a joint exhibition by Durban artists Fran Saunders and Peter Machen. The exhibition consists of two bodies of work, which although separate, nonetheless creates a set of dialogues. The love we leave behind reflects a view both artists hold: that our lives derive a particular mode of meaning from moments infused with love. Machen brings humanity to his plastic portraits precisely by bathing them in love and compassion, even as they reference complex narratives of colonialism. Saunders’ unlikely but poetic juxtapositions create a new world, which although violent and caustic at times, has love as at the centre of its orbit.
